Volunteer Opportunities Locally.

  • Turning Point | Mission:  a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonsectarian, volunteer, community-based organization whose goal is to empower those challenged with the issues of homelessness and near homelessness by providing confidential, supportive, and educational services. We pledge to help those help themselves.”Roles: Volunteers at Turning Point complete client intakes, answer phones, work on the computer, and help with our small emergency food pantry. Volunteers may also be asked to help with general organizing, computer updating, scanning, filing, fundraising and assistance with our special programs.  The Turning Point office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Volunteers are needed most during these hours but could also be used during non-operational hours.  If you are interested in volunteering, please call 508.291.0535 or email Debra Ito.
  • Coastline Services | Mission: To be a trusted provider of resources and services that support self-determination and community well-being.  |  Roles:  click on each to learn more - Caregiver Companions, Foster Grandparents, Money Management and Nursing Home Ombudsman
  • Gifts to Give | Mission: "Building a new currency for philanthropy by building a more caring community that's focused on child poverty, literacy service to others and giving."  |  ALL volunteer; No paid staff from top to bottom
  • Habitat for Humanity, Buzzards Bay  | Mission:  To bring people together to build homes, communities and hope.  |  Roles: Include construction professionals, site supervisors, team leaders, and handyman/willing-to-learn volunteers.  Also, you can also be part of the lunch crews that feed our hungry volunteers! Volunteers are also needed to serve on our board/committees - fundraising, land acquisition, building committee, volunteer recruiting, legal, faith relations, and family relations.
  • Damien's Pantry |  Mission: "To help end hunger in the greater Wareham/New Bedford area by giving food to the people in need, promoting education and hunger awareness in the community, and providing information to our clients regarding other community resources."  | Roles include, but not limited to food distribution and warehouse stocking, sales floor and backroom and many other options.  
  • St. Anthony Padua Food Pantry | Mission: To feed the hungry and the poor.  In addition to providing a bag full of hearty staples and more to take home, provides a warm meal of soup, sandwiches, pastries and drinks and hosts other special services for clients. | Roles: Include getting products in place before distributing, begin breaking down boxes for recycling, serving the participants and other duties, as needed | Contact: Parish Office at 508-993-1691 during office hours (Monday and Friday 8AM-3PM; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9AM - 4PM) or via email at ana@saintanthonynewbedford.com  
  • Salvation Army  |  Mission:  "... to meet human needs in His [Christ's] name without discrimination (note: no religious affiliation required) | Roles:  Include food pantry and serving, holiday meals, sorting toys, the Red Kettle, and more.  Contact the main number 508.997.6561 or email the officers Michael.Jung@use.salvationarmy.org  | Amanda.Jung@use.salvationarmy.org
  • Care SouthCoast  |  Mission: "To not giving up on any animal no matter how hopeless their situation may be. We are their voice when no one else is there."   | Roles:  take care of the cats at our shelter in Acushnet.  Scoop litter, feed, do laundry, and clean up after them. We also get to play with cute cats along the way. Also to help with home visits, pet transport, fundraising events, and processing adoption applications.  
  • Habitat for Cats  |  Mission:  "Dedicated to helping homeless cats through Trap-Neuter-Return and Adoption programs." |  Roles:  adoption receptionist, adoption follow-up phone calls, ceaning & feeding at PostCare Facility, foster parent, clerical assistance, sanctuary, fundraising and tabling
  • Buzzards Bay Coalition  |  Mission:  A membership-supported nonprofit organization dedicated to the restoration, protection, and sustainable use and enjoyment of our irreplaceable Bay and its watershed. The Coalition works to improve the health of the Bay ecosystem for all through education, conservation, research, and advocacy.  |  Roles:  Help out at events, water testing, outdoor cleanups and trail work, education programs, and more. If you want to have fun, meet new people, and share your skills and passion
  • Mattapoisett Free Public Library  |  Mission:  To provide free and open access to a broad range of materials and services to people of all ages and backgrounds.    |  Roles:  Include shelving, shelf reading, book repair, story time craft preparation and much more.  Some volunteers also choose to deliver books to home-bound patrons.  Summer time is also an excellent season to lend a helping hand in the children's room, when many additional activities are added to the schedule.
  • Mattapoisett Museum |  Mission:  To collaborate and partner with surrounding communities to provide a place of learning and sharing. To collect, maintain and make available for use cultural and historical materials relating to Mattapoisett's heritage. | Roles: Vary. Contact the Museum for details.
