VISION SUPPORT & RESOURCES for Individuals with Low Vision, Blindness, Challenges Reading

The definition of “Legally Blind” is someone with:

  • Vision with correction of 20/200 or less in the better eye; or
  • Peripheral field of ten degrees radius (10º) or less, regardless of visual acuity.

*Legal Blindness does not mean totally blind.

Benefits Available 

Massachusetts Commission for the Blind (MCB)

You may be eligible for services from MCB.  To be eligible for services from MCB, you:

  • Must be a Massachusetts resident.
  • Must be legally blind (see above)

Application for:  Identification Card & Certificate of Blindness

Support Services:  Assistive Technology (AT), Orientation and Mobility (O&M), and Vision Rehabilitation Therapy.

Reading Support:  Perkins Library (WATCH VIDEO PRESENTATION HERE)

Eligibility includes:  

  • legally blind with vision of 20/200 or worse, or
  • have a visual field no greater than 20 degrees;
  • have corrected vision, but cannot see well enough to read with comfort for extended periods of time; or
  • have a physical condition that makes holding a book difficult; and
  • have been certified by a medical doctor or doctor of osteopathy as having a reading disability that has a physical basis that prevents one from reading standard print
