Zoning Board of Appeals

PURPOSE: The Zoning Board of Appeals interprets and enforces the Town’s Zoning By-Laws. On a case by case basis the Board has the power to hear and decide on petitions for:

  • Special Permits as allowed under the Zoning By-Laws
  • Variances from the requirements of the Zoning By-Laws
  • Appeals from the Decision of the Inspector of Buildings
  • Comprehensive Permits under Chapter 40B of the General Laws of the Commonwealth

COMPOSITION: The Zoning Board of Appeals is comprised of five regular members and five associate members, all appointed by the Board of Selectmen. The members are assisted in their work by the Secretary and the Inspector of Buildings.

SERVICES: The Board of Appeals holds public hearings on cases before it. The hearings are held on the third Thursday of each month. Notice of these hearings must be published 14 days before the hearing, and property owners who are within 300 feet of the subject property must also be notified. A decision is written and filed with the Town Clerk and there is a 20 day appeal period.
