The Veterans Service Office is responsible for organizing the annual Memorial Day ceremonies in Mattapoisett.
The ceremony is held on Memorial Day at 1:30 P.M on the Mattapoisett Library grounds. The Florence Eastman
280-American Legion sponsors the event. In the past, our principal speaker has been either a local veteran or
an officer from the Newport Naval War College. Members of the Old Hammondtown Orchestra perform and
a student from Old Rochester Regional Junior High School delivers the Gettysburg Address.
After the ceremony, the parade marshall will assemble the marchers. The parade proceeds to the town wharf for a salute to the veterans who lost their lives at sea, then to Cushing Cemetery for a salute to those who lost their lives on land. The parade ends at the American Legion hall on Depot Street, where refreshments are served to the marchers.
The Veterans Service Officer participates in the Rochester ceremonies, which are held at 12 P.M. on Sunday, the day before Memorial Day. |
