The William E. Mee Youth Sailing Program is the first program of the Mattapoisett Community Sailing Association. Focusing on youth between the ages of 9 and 14 from Mattapoisett, Marion and Rochester, the program teaches sailing, seamanship and teamwork.
William Billy Mee grew up in Fairhaven and lived in Marion, but his heart was in Mattapoisett Harbor where he moored his beloved Kathryn L, a thirty foot Allied Seawind ketch. He was a fixture on the Mattapoisett waterfront launching and hauling thousands of boats during his many years working with Brownell Boat Systems. Always the first one to jump in to help a friend in a storm, to stop and talk with an old timer on the dock or answer a question from a youngster, he was a friend to many. Billy was also an expert sailor who knew every port in Buzzards Bay and whose trademark blue
spinnaker could frequently be seen flying through the mooring field in a typical reach home from across the bay after an afternoon of sailing.
