Gasoline Safety
Gas cans.jpg

The following are safety tips to remember when handling gasoline:

  • Store gasoline in an airtight approved storage container holding 5 gallons or less.
  • Transport gasoline containers in the trunk of a car or in the bed of a pick-up truck. Never place gasoline containers in the cab or passenger compartment of the vehicle.
  • Only airtight containers should be used.
  • Secure container to prevent it from sliding around or tipping over while being transported.
  • Never leave a container of gasoline in direct sunlight or in the trunk of a car that is in direct sunlight. The sun can heat the gasoline, causing pressure to build in the container.
  • Transportation of gasoline in private vehicles is permitted, provided such flammable liquid is contained in approved containers with no individual container exceeding 7 gallons, with the total quantity not to exceed 21 gallons.
  • Gasoline should be stored outside the home in a garage or tool shed.
  • Store only enough gasoline necessary to power small equipment.
  • Do not store gasoline near appliances such as clothes dryers or water pumps.
  • Leftover gasoline should never be poured down the drain, dumped on the ground, or thrown in the trash.
  • A portable fire extinguisher with a Class B rating should be located near any area where gasoline is stored.
